Her mother earned both a Ph.D. and an MA in Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles. She also completed a master’s degree in African Studies from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

She got a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from Yale University, where she focused on Afro-American research.
